In the summertime of 2016, Cavaleiro triumphed alongside Portugal to claim the European Championship title. Subsequently, he terminated his contract with Monaco and remained unemployed for half a year. In early 2017, he joined Shanghai SIPG, yet his tenure lasted just one season during which he appeared in only six matches for the club. At the onset of 2018, Cavaleiro parted ways with Shanghai SIPG and officially retired from professional football.
